Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the territories of the Spanish branch of the Habsburg monarchy and their rulers—viceroys or governors—from the perspective of dignity. A relationship is established between the dignity of the rulers and that of the territories governed by them, which we consider a key political dynamic of the Ancien Régime. Special emphasis is placed on cases in which either the territory or the ruler regarded the other party as unworthy, since these situations of asymmetry more clearly reveal what was considered the norm. To this end, the well-known paradigm of royal absence and its associated problems is revisited, in order to demonstrate the importance of viceregal authority, contrasting for this purpose the concepts of authority and power. The analysis then follows the proposed approach from the perspective of the territories and the cases of rulers who were considered insufficient in dignity to govern them. The final section adopts the opposite perspective, namely that of nobles who considered themselves to possess greater dignity than the territory to which they were to be sent. The article concludes that both perspectives reveal a mirror-like dynamic in which territories and nobles established comparisons of dignity to determine what or who they considered sufficiently worthy to establish the relationship between rulers and the governed.
