Abstract
The historical tension between the Russian Federation and Ukraine following the end of the Cold War has culminated in an armed conflict approaching its fourth year. Barring any unforeseen developments in the conflict itself and in the absence of international intervention, it will be difficult to bring the conflict to an end in the foreseeable future. At the outset, Russia displayed a military strategy and combat capability that fell well short of the image it had projected on the international stage. It subsequently adapted a hybrid
warfare strategy that combines conventional, irregular, informational, and cyber operations, resulting in a war of attrition on Ukrainian territory. The economic sanctions imposed on Russia, together with the political, military, and diplomatic support provided by the West to Ukraine, initially strengthened NATO as an international military defense alliance. However, with the arrival of the new administration in Washington
in 2025, the slowdown in the United States’ military and political support for Ukraine threatens to destabilize
NATO’s future and consolidate the realignment of the international alliances that support Russia in the global
arena. This has led to a shift in the center of gravity of the war, the implications of which now extend beyond
the territories directly affected by the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and are transforming the landscape of the
geopolitical and military alliances that dominate the world order. This shift is the focus of the present study.
Methodologically, the article develops a qualitative case study based on a documentary and interpretative
review of specialized academic, doctrinal, institutional, and journalistic sources. The analysis is guided by analogical hermeneutics, which enables the interpretation of the historical, geopolitical, and strategic evolution of Russo-Ukrainian relations, as well as the transformation of the so-called Special Military Operation into a hybrid war. The central thesis is that the center of gravity of the war is no longer located exclusively within the Ukrainian theater of operations but has shifted toward the West due to six factors. The study concludes that this shift increases the complexity of the conflict, prolongs its global effects, and redefines the strategic conditions for its conclusion.
