Abstract
The general purpose of the study was to examine and adapt the concepts of the third university mission at the University of Quindío, aiming to transform the traditional model by integrating teaching, research and extension to address social, economic and environmental challenges. Problems such as the need to incorporate comprehensive training processes and to establish knowledge transfer mechanisms that link academia with the community were investigated. The basic design combined a theoretical analysis of institutional practices with the review of linking initiatives and success stories in the curricularization of extension and in the implementation of collaborative research models. Among the main findings, it was highlighted that the systematic incorporation of extension activities in the curriculum not only enriches the training of students, but also the other members of the academic community, enhancing the university's capacity to generate concrete solutions to regional problems. Likewise, it was evident that the transfer of knowledge, when integrated with the practical knowledge of the community, strengthens the social impact of research, and that the articulation with the productive sector and civil society is crucial to achieve sustainable development. In conclusion, the study interpreted that the redefinition of the mission axes allows the University of Quindío to evolve from a model of exclusively technical training to one that promotes social transformation and regional development. This comprehensive approach, based on the dialogue of knowledge and the active participation of the community, is positioned as key to facing contemporary challenges and consolidating the institution as a driver of change in its environment.
