Abstract
Since the inception of the multilateral trading system, the reduction of barriers and non-discrimination in trade among state members have been promoted. However, the rounds of negotiations under the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) regime and within the WTO, which have aimed at reducing unjustified protectionism as well as creating trade rules in line with current practices, have tended to present various setbacks in terms of consensus. It is in this sense that certain trade agreements that subsequently give rise to international organizations have become more notorious as a complementary regulatory tool, detracting from the WTO's multilateralism. This is the case of the European Union (EU), which not only shares its genesis with the WTO after the end of World War II, but has also managed to take outstanding steps, even consolidating itself as a paradigm of leadership at the geopolitical level. Thus, this paper focuses on a multidisciplinary methodology that, from a legal and historical perspective, characterizes the political and commercial influence of the EU as an economic integration within international trade. For this purpose, the disputes registered within the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) are considered as well as the trade agreements signed by the EU with other countries are also identified. This is evidence of its influence as a determining player, and a categorical reference for international cooperation and global governance, given its direct impact on the dynamics of world trade in contemporary international relations.
